Behaviour

A school community functions successfully when each member respects and values other members in the community. We therefore set high expectations in all areas of school life and encourage students to become responsible citizens within their community. Self discipline is encouraged and a major emphasis placed on the reinforcement of good behaviour, a positive attitude to work and regular attendance.

A well established structure for behaviour and discipline operates at Hope High, using a balanced range of rewards and sanctions which reinforce self discipline and cooperation.

Certificates and rewards are given for excellence, improved achievement and attendance, as well as service to the school. Students are encouraged to earn credits for work and behaviour.

All teachers report every half tern on the behaviour of students in their classes, as well as keeping records during each lesson. Where students fail to meet the required standards, sanctions are used, which might include a reporting system, detention, withdrawal from class and, in more serious incidents the exclusion procedure.

Students may be detained by a teacher for up to ten minutes at the end of a morning or afternoon session, without notice to parents. For detentions longer than ten minutes, written notice will be given twenty four hours in advance.
